American Screenwriters Association
ASA Screenplay Competition

Script Formatting Guidelines

1. Screenplays must be properly written in standard screenplay format. If you are not familiar with standard screenplay formatting, we recommend the following book as a guide:

The Screenwriters Bible by David Trottier

2. Your screenplay must be submitted in English, original and unproduced (meaning made into a movie or TV movie, or purchased for production) at the time of submission. Optioned scripts are acceptable for entry.

3. Script formatting also includes:

  • The screenplay should be copied onto three-hole punched paper with two to three metal fasteners (brads).
    • International applicants may use equivalent size paper (A4) as a substitute
    • You can obtain three hole punch paper at any office supply store such as Office Depot or Staples, and you can also get your script printed onto three-hole paper at Kinko's, Office Depot and Staples.
    • We suggest the Acco brand #6 or #5 solid brass fasteners. You can order brads directly from the ASA bookstore
  • White card stock cover (front and back) to protect the scripts during handling by our staff and judges. Hint: Do not use construction paper. White card stock is your heavier paper available at most office supply stores or Kinko's. You can order stock covers directly from the ASA bookstore.
  • No writing on the spine of the script.
  • Do not include extraneous camera directions. These are better left to the director.
  • All pages, other than your title page and first page, must be numbered (we mean your pages are numbered 2,3,4,5...etc., not numbered scenes which is a shooting script and not acceptable). Please check for missing or duplicated pages.
  • Scripts must be in 12-point regular courier font and dark enough to be easily legible. Hint: Do not provide scripts that have badly photocopied pages or in light print.
  • Total script length for scripts must be between 80 – 130 pages (not including the cover page) (we will allow a leeway of a few pages either way if your script is just under 80 pages or just over 130 pages).
  • You do not need to include a synopsis, treatment or logline with your script entry.
  • No additional materials should be attached to the submission such as illustrations, casting suggestions, letters or resumes. No special packaging or gimmicks. We appreciate your creativity but won’t have the time to enjoy it!
4. Adaptations are acceptable for entry in our competition as long as you have all the appropriate and/or required approvals/waivers/permissions from any and all right holders. If you are unsure please consult an entertainment attorney for your own protection.

5. DO NOT include your name or any other identifying information (address, registration #, etc.) on your title page or in your script. The scripts are judged anonymously and are marked with a corresponding number in our database so we know who's script is who's, but the judges do not.
